If we went 4th, we didnt' know which authors would be able to handle it, so the only sane option seemed to be to do them mostly in-house so that we could handle whatever fate threw at us. 08/07/2008 20:28:39 ‹Nick Logue› Oh!  Your party can have members of as many factions as you like! 08/07/2008 20:28:40 ‹cappadocius› Consider your answer carefully! 08/07/2008 20:28:52 ‹Nick Logue› Doesn't matter.  You don't need to be the same faction. 08/07/2008 20:29:03 ‹Nick Logue› I dunno about the T-shirts though! 08/07/2008 20:29:05 ‹cappadocius› Faction T-Shirts! 08/07/2008 20:29:11 ‹Rambling Scribe› Hi all! 08/07/2008 20:29:11 ‹James Jacobs› It was somewhat of a necessary evil to have so many in-house authors. The purpose is to show bookstores what we're gonna offer; without solicitations, they don't know what's available to get. 08/07/2008 20:47:13 ‹cappadocius› just a problem player. 08/07/2008 20:47:23 ‹Ross writing› cappadocius, the Posh and Turtle is owned by a human wizard. 08/07/2008 20:47:25 ‹James Jacobs› And since the book trade works so far in the future, we have to get them the info SUPER EARLY. 08/07/2008 20:47:26 ‹Pygon› RS - I woudl have cast blur, but apparently how well that works against SA is up to interpretation. 08/07/2008 20:47:36 ‹cappadocius› Ross: er. okay? 08/07/2008 20:47:36 ‹Lilith› Ross writing, yeah, I was remembering that myself.... 08/07/2008 20:47:39 ‹Russ› Daigle - when the rules change enough (i.e. for LG, when 3.5 came out, and again later), letting someone retool their character to take advantage of the new rules. It is a horrible idea. 08/07/2008 20:47:41 ‹Rambling Scribe› KnightErrantJR: Imagine how nervous I was running PFS for Nick, Josh, Jason et al. 08/07/2008 20:47:42 ‹greengrunt› 08/07/2008 20:47:43 ‹Nick Logue› Core Rulebooks.  You must create a new character for PFS.  The division of the "arcs" into Seasons is helpful too.  Also the Season's plots being loosely knit is helpful too.  It's all about the Factions really.  You do good, your faction does awesome. 08/07/2008 20:47:57 * The Last Rogue quit (timeout) 08/07/2008 20:47:58 * The Last Rogue quit (timeout) 08/07/2008 20:47:58 * The Last Rogue quit (timeout) 08/07/2008 20:47:58 * The Last Rogue quit (timeout) 08/07/2008 20:48:04 ‹Darkmeer› James:  How far in advance do you work your schedule for books (honest question) 08/07/2008 20:48:05 ‹greengrunt› RS> looks like you did fine man! 08/07/2008 20:48:06 ‹Daigle› Thanks! 08/07/2008 20:48:14 ‹Nick Logue› We will allow conversion to Pathfinder RPG at the outset of Season 1 though. 08/07/2008 20:48:14 ‹Russ› Treasure division and item access? Opening the DMG to purchase, or restricting it? It's great! It's like a mini-campaign. Well done, Paizo boys! 08/07/2008 20:48:19 ‹KnightErrantJR› Yeah, I can imagine that was a trip . . . especially after reading about the characters they played . . . 08/07/2008 20:48:24 ‹Blazej› Nick Logue, What will happen to characters from Season 0 when Season 1 starts?  Will that have to be replaced? 08/07/2008 20:48:32 ‹Rambling Scribe› Greengrunt: It went well, but I was pretty nervous! 08/07/2008 20:48:37 ‹Russ› I don't think requiring feedback from DMs is going to wind up working well. 08/07/2008 20:48:50 ‹Pygon› RS - did Erik's face stay like that? 08/07/2008 20:48:52 ‹Nick Logue› The DMG is not open to purchase.  You buy what you find, and you can earn the right to buy other things by scoring enough Prestige.  Items are not split at the table. 08/07/2008 20:48:57 ‹Nick Logue› Abstraction is our friend. 08/07/2008 20:49:01 ‹cappadocius› Hail Mother Taldor, Our Home and Native Land! I've become too nice a GM in my old age. 08/07/2008 21:01:41 * Watcher quit (timeout) 08/07/2008 21:01:43 ‹greengrunt› Ross> I've been having those new Mountain Dew flavors to stay up- leave me too wired 08/07/2008 21:01:53 * David quit (timeout) 08/07/2008 21:01:53 * David quit (timeout) 08/07/2008 21:02:05 * The Last Rogue quit (timeout) 08/07/2008 21:02:13 ‹Rambling Scribe› 08/07/2008 21:02:20 ‹Russ› Well, I would HOPE you guys would have the good sense to bring in people at least for advice who HAVE made the RPGA work, rather than repeating the mistakes they eventually learned to avoid. 21:02:50 ‹Nick Logue› Jason's here too.  Don't forget.  ALSO:  We ain't aiming to do things like the RPGA.  PFS will be its own magnificently fun thing.  My advice:  Check out the info on August 1st before you write it off (and badmouth it).  Then if you think it's poo, poo-poo on it at will my man.  08/07/2008 21:03:10 ‹greengrunt› 08/07/2008 21:03:19 ‹greengrunt› Nick said "poo" 08/07/2008 21:03:22 ‹BrianC› Poo!! 08/07/2008 21:03:23 ‹Nameless› True, at this point, we have scant details, so who knows how it'll end up. My bet: awesome. 08/07/2008 21:03:25 ‹Nick Logue› HA! 08/07/2008 21:03:26 ‹Nick Logue› I did! 08/07/2008 21:03:30 ‹KnightErrantJR› I'm really excited to be on the ground floor.  I've never been a part of this sort of thing, because Living Greyhawk always felt a bit impenetrable to me, and this feels a little smaller and more, I don't know, organic? 08/07/2008 21:03:35 ‹yoda8myhead› Nick's taming his dirty mouth 08/07/2008 21:03:38 ‹BrianC› poopoopoopoopoopoopoopoopoopoopoopoopoo 08/07/2008 21:03:39 ‹Daigle› I totally read that as scat details 08/07/2008 21:03:39 ‹Nameless› Just with the roster of freelance writers they have for the modules. 08/07/2008 21:03:42 ‹BrianC› 08/07/2008 21:03:43 ‹Russ› Roger. My feedback isn't welcome. Shutting up. 08/07/2008 21:03:46 ‹Nick Logue› I usually aim for Awesome!  08/07/2008 21:03:58 ‹James Jacobs› Russ> We're not trying to ape the RPGA necessarilly either. I'm probably the WORST person to talk about it (I've never played in a tournament module and, frankly, find the whole scene very offputting as compared to casual gaming)... 08/07/2008 21:03:58 ‹Nick Logue› Yeah, we wanted to lauch the campaign in style.  Hence the all-star line up of freelancers. 08/07/2008 21:04:01 ‹cappadocius› Russ, are you even LISTENING to what is being said to you? 08/07/2008 21:04:10 ‹cappadocius› Also, how is "Don't suck like RPGA sucked" feedback? 08/07/2008 21:04:21 ‹Russ› Cappa - yeah, I'm listening to you ripping on me, dude 08/07/2008 21:04:24 ‹Russ› And Nick pilin' on now 08/07/2008 21:04:33 ‹James Jacobs› But this isn't the best venue to try to give us advice on how to run an Organized Play setup. 08/07/2008 21:04:36 ‹Nick Logue› I'm all for taking some advice from RPGAers.  I've had a few conversations with Creighton Broadhurst and others. 08/07/2008 21:04:52 ‹Lilith› Russ, chill...All they are asking is wait until August 1st to give feedback. Is that so hard? 08/07/2008 21:04:54 ‹greengrunt› JJ>If I was in a major metropolis that had access to that kind of play.. I'd be all over it.. Ha! 08/07/2008 21:05:17 ‹Absinth› I just had a near TPK last week as the group strayed off the path and into an unprepared sidetrek. They entered the cairn of an ancient warlord. I only mentioned this on a sidenote for flavour, but as soon as I mentioned rumours of treasure, off they went. Four out of five are dead meat now. You shouldn't fight mummies on 3rd level... 08/07/2008 21:05:20 ‹cappadocius› Seriously, *I'm* allowed in on this thing. 08/07/2008 21:05:22 ‹James Jacobs› Frankly, if you're that worried, posting your concerns on the Messageboards is a MUCH better place to go. 08/07/2008 21:05:25 ‹cappadocius› How useful can it be? 08/07/2008 21:05:48 ‹Nick Logue› I'm not ripping on you my man!  Seriously.  I'm just not getting where you are coming from yet.  We haven't officially released much info about PFS yet.  I'm not sure why you think it's gonna suck.  If you think it's gonna suck and have valid reasons, now is the time to tell me.  I can change EVERYTHING!  I have this power...well, when Josh lets me.  08/07/2008 21:05:51 ‹Russ› I figured talking about PFS *once* on this chat wouldn't kill us. I hope you revisit that in year 2 but crafting is effectively impossible to balance if it costs xp in a living campaign (spending xp in a living campaign is GOOD, it makes you more powerful than your brethren) 08/07/2008 21:11:10 ‹Mothman› With crafting, it would be hard to keep track of what sort of power level and type of magical items groups have 08/07/2008 21:11:14 * cappadocius suspects crafting opens up too much chance for unbalanced items to screw up the "living" part of it. 08/07/2008 21:11:15 ‹Nick Logue› Skeld:  We really hope to.  We are looking into some cool possibilities in this vein at present actually. 08/07/2008 21:11:18 ‹Blazej› Nick Logue, that thing you didn't say that I don't remember. 08/07/2008 21:11:19 ‹BrianC› I think it's a matter of not wanting to have to create a whole mess of crafting rules that can be used Society-wide. 08/07/2008 21:11:37 ‹James Jacobs› Russ> Crafting doesn't cost XP in PF RPG... so that shouldn't be a concern once those rules go live. 08/07/2008 21:11:52 ‹Nick Logue› Russ:  Yeah, that was our thought too.  I nerfed Crafting.  I slew it.  But everyone agreed with me.  08/07/2008 21:11:55 * Absinth gets a refill 08/07/2008 21:12:01 ‹cappadocius› Nick: Can you give Wyvern an "official" answer to his/her question? 08/07/2008 21:12:02 ‹Russ› James> Yeah, I alluded badly to that under the comment about not having to use two systems for it 08/07/2008 21:12:03 ‹Nick Logue› Word.  Thanks James:  Tis true.  08/07/2008 21:12:04 * Daigle got his print Gaz today! 08/07/2008 21:12:19 ‹Nick Logue› Shoot!  What was Wyvern's question? 08/07/2008 21:12:20 ‹Watcher› Congrats Daigle 08/07/2008 21:12:23 ‹greengrunt› which Gaz Daigle!! 08/07/2008 21:12:25 ‹Pygon› yay Gaz! 08/07/2008 21:12:27 ‹Wyvern› I am a he/she! 08/07/2008 21:12:30 ‹Daigle› THE Gaz 08/07/2008 21:12:33 ‹Wyvern› 08/07/2008 21:12:40 ‹Pygon› Nick - it was about ahving to stick to the script 08/07/2008 21:12:40 ‹Fray› Eyebite, 600+ miles from me... hard to game with that comute... 08/07/2008 21:12:43 ‹Absinth› Have fun, Daigle! It's a great read! 08/07/2008 21:12:45 ‹cappadocius› Wyvern? Don't waste your 30 seconds of Nick's attention! 08/07/2008 21:12:48 ‹greengrunt› Which Gaz!? 08/07/2008 21:12:49 ‹Nick Logue› FOUND IT! 08/07/2008 21:12:54 ‹Pygon› in the scenarios 08/07/2008 21:12:54 ‹Wyvern› I'm not much into organized play, but I've heard that DMs are more like just referees and are not allowed to improvise and deviate from what's written. Is that true on PFS too? 08/07/2008 21:12:57 ‹Nick Logue› Sorry Wyvern! 08/07/2008 21:12:57 ‹Blazej› Although if you are getting 1 experience per session I doubt people would want to spend it making a 1st level scroll. 08/07/2008 21:12:58 ‹Eyebite› lol a little bit Fray...a little bit 08/07/2008 21:13:13 ‹Fray› Wyvern› I'm not much into organized play, but I've heard that DMs are more like just referees and are not allowed to improvise and deviate from what's written. Is that true on PFS too? 08/07/2008 21:13:28 ‹cappadocius› Now we wait for Nick to type his response! 08/07/2008 21:13:32 ‹Daigle› Now I can take it with me! 08/07/2008 21:13:32 ‹Nick Logue› Okay:  08/07/2008 21:13:32 ‹Justin's EVEing› damn, I feel like I've missed so much 08/07/2008 21:13:32 ‹greengrunt› The Pathfinder Gaz or the Dark Horizon's Uni Gaz?? 08/07/2008 21:13:33 ‹Daigle› Absinth...I've been reading as much of the PDF as I can in a sitting 08/07/2008 21:13:35 ‹Russ› And as for the negative - I'm approaching this as how do I get an RPGA nut to try PFS. So I've got an eye out for things that are death to local play, like con-centrism (which I hope won't be an issue) and charging for mods (which I think will be, but I'll have to see how it plays out,), so that's where that negative comes from 08/07/2008 21:13:37 ‹Russ› Wyvern - it's not true in the RPGA, but some try to browbeat DMs into that 08/07/2008 21:13:39 * Justin's EVEing changes his/her nickname to Justin Sluder 08/07/2008 21:13:41 * Fray cues muzak 08/07/2008 21:13:43 * Pygon hums the Jeopardy theme 08/07/2008 21:13:44 ‹Skeld› stay on target... 08/07/2008 21:14:01 ‹Nick Logue› I am currently writing the PFS GM's Guide and I am encouraging what I call "Incorporation of Deviation"...it's just a working phrase really, and now that I read it, it looks like poo.  08/07/2008 21:14:17 ‹Russ› If I only need to buy a PFS mod ONCE no matter how many times I run it, that'll help a lot. The old TSR/WotC model was "pay to be able to report". 08/07/2008 21:14:18 ‹cappadocius› "Incorporation of Deviance" is awesome, though. 08/07/2008 21:14:23 ‹Hill Giant› Incorporation of Deviancy? 08/07/2008 21:14:33 ‹Russ› scenario, pardon 08/07/2008 21:14:39 ‹KnightErrantJR› I'm interested to see how the end of Living Greyhawk shakes out.  I know a lot of those folks aren't up for Living FR  (but a lot are) . . . should be an interesting time of it. 08/07/2008 21:14:43 ‹greengrunt› If you got Sinister's Uni Gaz I'm going to start dropping F-Bombs  Daigle.. I swear! 08/07/2008 21:14:47 ‹Rambling Scribe› Icorporeal Deviants? 08/07/2008 21:14:48 ‹Nick Logue› Russ:  Correct.  You only need to buy it once. 08/07/2008 21:14:51 ‹Fray› Nick Logue> So... the PFS GM's Guide looks like poo... hmmmm.... 08/07/2008 21:14:58 ‹Rambling Scribe› ...Incorporeal... 08/07/2008 21:15:00 ‹James Jacobs› Russ> Paizo's not an enormous company; and as a result, we don't really have the luxury at this time to give out the scenarious for free is the thing. Who knows what the future might bring, though!! 08/07/2008 21:15:02 ‹Nick Logue› AND!  Incoporation of Deviancy always!!! 08/07/2008 21:15:02 ‹cappadocius› Russ: That was my understanding of the model. You can buy the scenario for the nominal fee, and then run and report as often as you like. But you can only PLAY a scenario once. 08/07/2008 21:15:06 ‹Pygon› $2-3 per session would kinda suck wouldn't it... 08/07/2008 21:15:11 ‹Daigle› greengrunt...no worries there. I do not have that....yet. 08/07/2008 21:15:22 ‹Russ› Pygon - it DID. 08/07/2008 21:15:39 ‹Russ› Keeping in mind that I was RPGA hardcore, and would play as many as 100 rounds a year (and run more) 08/07/2008 21:15:41 ‹greengrunt› Oh so you got the Pathfinder Gaz?? That was pretty cool! 08/07/2008 21:15:45 ‹Wyvern› Ah! Thanks Nick! ...and cappa and Russ. 08/07/2008 21:16:01 ‹KnightErrantJR› Well, much as I'd love to stick around, I've got to run. 08/07/2008 21:16:05 ‹cappadocius› Don't thank me! I often misunderstand and get things wrong! 08/07/2008 21:16:07 ‹James Jacobs› My understanding as well. Buy the module for two bucks, then you can run it for as many groups as you want. Charging for each report seems bass-ackwards to me, as far as encouraging GMs to recruit new players goes. 08/07/2008 21:16:07 ‹greengrunt› I really wished they covered the other side of Golarion too though 08/07/2008 21:16:12 ‹Pygon› gnite er, Knight. 08/07/2008 21:16:14 ‹Daigle› Have a great night KNight! 08/07/2008 21:16:22 ‹Nameless› Nick, I like this Incorporation of Deviance idea and would like to hear more... 08/07/2008 21:16:24 ‹Russ› Thank you for the clarification. 08/07/2008 21:16:27 ‹KnightErrantJR› Taking the kids to the fair tomorrow nite, so I'm not sure if I'll see ya'll tomorrow or not 08/07/2008 21:16:31 ‹greengrunt› Night Knight 08/07/2008 21:16:32 ‹Nick Logue› Basically, GMS at homeplay can do WHATEVER they want with a Scenario as far as I'm concerned.  BUT!  At a convention...time constraints make it harder. 08/07/2008 21:16:36 ‹Nameless› Later Knight!!! 08/07/2008 21:16:44 ‹Fray› Later KNight 08/07/2008 21:16:47 ‹Nick Logue› Nameless:  It's called Sinister Adventures.  08/07/2008 21:16:49 ‹Russ› Are you targeting for 4 hour slots, or 5? 08/07/2008 21:16:49 ‹Fake Healer› I spend $6-7 a session on beer. $4-5 a session on food. $2-3 isn't much if the quality that Paizo is known for is there. 08/07/2008 21:16:50 ‹Watcher› Later Knight 08/07/2008 21:16:50 ‹Eyebite› Night KEJR 08/07/2008 21:16:51 ‹greengrunt› Take care of the fam Knight! 08/07/2008 21:16:53 ‹James Jacobs› Greengrunt> There's more than "the other side." The inner sea region's about as big as the top of Africa and Europe. There's a LOT LOT LOT more out there. 08/07/2008 21:16:59 ‹Skeld› Nick Logue, that's what i wanted to hear... 08/07/2008 21:17:24 ‹Nick Logue› You only pay to buy the PDF.  You can run it as many times as you want.  And we hope its LOTS O' TIMES! 08/07/2008 21:17:27 ‹Nameless› Nick, oh, Sinister Adventures will be seen by me. My roommate is buying everything coming out, and I will be playing it! One of the few campaigns I play in. 08/07/2008 21:17:33 ‹Urza› JJ: I'll happily pay for the scenerios if you guys maintain a comparible quality between the PFS scenerios and the  PF Set Pieces 08/07/2008 21:17:38 ‹KnightErrantJR› Night all . . . 08/07/2008 21:17:40 ‹greengrunt› JJ> Damn! If the Gaz would've been 300 plus pages.. I still would've been all over that! 08/07/2008 21:17:58 ‹Watcher› Not to change the subject, but I'm looking forward to Ascent of the Drow 08/07/2008 21:18:04 ‹Nick Logue› Nameless:  NICE!  Hope you survive!  08/07/2008 21:18:10 ‹cappadocius› I was correct that you can only PLAY a scenario once, though, right? 08/07/2008 21:18:11 ‹Russ› Do you know if you will be using lifestyle costs? I'm rooting for "no" myself 08/07/2008 21:18:13 ‹Nick Logue› 4 hour slots. 08/07/2008 21:18:16 ‹James Jacobs› Urza> As Overlord of All Things RPG... making sure the scenarios are high quality is part of my job. Getting art in there and getting Nick involved are two ways we're planning on keeping things quality. 08/07/2008 21:18:22 ‹Nick Logue› NO on lifestyle. 08/07/2008 21:18:28 ‹Nameless› Nick, should I be worried that my roommate told me the exact same thing? 08/07/2008 21:18:40 * Nick Logue blushes at James' comment. 08/07/2008 21:18:42 * KnightErrantJR quit (timeout) 08/07/2008 21:18:43 * KnightErrantJR quit (timeout) 08/07/2008 21:18:44 ‹James Jacobs› Greengrunt> The Gaz would have to be thousands of pages to cover the entire planet in the amount of detail we covered the Inner Sea Region., 08/07/2008 21:18:45 ‹greengrunt› Nameless.. I would! 08/07/2008 21:18:53 ‹Nick Logue› Nameless:  HA! 08/07/2008 21:18:54 ‹Urza› JJ: Sounds good to me then 08/07/2008 21:18:54 ‹Rambling Scribe› What are lifestyle costs 08/07/2008 21:18:56 ‹Rambling Scribe› ? 08/07/2008 21:19:06 ‹Nick Logue› You don't want to know.  Absurd. 08/07/2008 21:19:11 ‹Absinth› . 08/07/2008 21:19:13 ‹cappadocius› Heck, if Vudra is as diverse as India, that's a 128 page book, minimum to ITSELF. 08/07/2008 21:19:19 ‹Nameless› Is lifestyle costs some sort of upkeep for your character? 08/07/2008 21:19:20 ‹yoda8myhead› Nick, will scenarios be workable into a longer campaign outside of organized play, or will they feel like tournament modules? 08/07/2008 21:19:25 ‹Russ› Rambling - a cost per adventure for your upkeep 08/07/2008 21:19:30 ‹greengrunt› JJ>Well.. I still would be all over that.. May be in a little debt because of it.. But still.. All over that! 08/07/2008 21:19:36 ‹Nick Logue› I think you could work em into a campaign yoda! 08/07/2008 21:19:40 ‹Rambling Scribe› Ah! 08/07/2008 21:19:47 ‹Nick Logue› The first 4 are wildly good and pretty adaptable really. 08/07/2008 21:19:51 ‹Russ› Rambling - usually free to live in the gutter (with penalties), an annoying fiddly amount for normal, and a lot for rich or luxuryr 08/07/2008 21:20:02 ‹cappadocius› What are the benefits of wearing out Faction T-Shirts to con scenarios? 08/07/2008 21:20:08 ‹cappadocius› wearing OUR 08/07/2008 21:20:24 ‹Rambling Scribe› Right. That's a pain in the ass with little benefit IMO. 08/07/2008 21:20:27 ‹Pygon› you know who you can hit without legal action. 08/07/2008 21:20:28 ‹greengrunt› JJ> How do you get your batteries recharged for the editing process? 08/07/2008 21:20:28 ‹Nick Logue› Alrighty!  I gotta rock, roll and run ya'all!  Speaking of art for PFS, I have some art orders to write up tonight in fact!  08/07/2008 21:20:30 ‹James Jacobs› Lifestile Costs = a shorthand way to charge a PC for things like food, taxes, rent, and other miscellaneous fees. They can be fun in some homebrew games, but they don't add fun to a living campaign. Just needless paperwork. 08/07/2008 21:20:32 ‹Blazej› You get a +1 armor bonus. 08/07/2008 21:20:37 ‹Absinth› I was laughing as I read about the Golarion globe in the shrine of Desna in PF 10. Was this meant as a nod to the steady demand for a Golarion globe by the fans? 08/07/2008 21:20:46 ‹Wyvern› cappa, you look stylish? 08/07/2008 21:20:48 ‹Blazej› Bye Logue! 08/07/2008 21:20:52 ‹greengrunt› Later Nick- on tomorrow night? 08/07/2008 21:20:56 ‹cappadocius› I WAS PROMISED MECHANICAL BENEFIT! 08/07/2008 21:20:56 ‹Nameless› Have a good one, Mr. Logue! 08/07/2008 21:20:58 ‹James Jacobs› Greengrunt> Assuming we stay in business... we'll get to those other parts of the world eventually. 08/07/2008 21:21:04 ‹Nick Logue› Lifestyle Costs = Everything That Isn't Fun About Real Life, Also Not Fun in Game.  08/07/2008 21:21:05 ‹Pygon› thanks Nick! 08/07/2008 21:21:05 ‹Mothman› You off Nick - seeya man - you here for Sinister chat tmrw? 08/07/2008 21:21:08 ‹Nick Logue› G'night everyone! 08/07/2008 21:21:10 ‹Absinth› Night, Nick! Have a sinister evening... 08/07/2008 21:21:14 ‹cappadocius› Night, Nick. 08/07/2008 21:21:16 ‹Nick Logue› I shall be Mothman! 08/07/2008 21:21:17 ‹Wyvern› Bye Nick 08/07/2008 21:21:21 ‹Nick Logue› G'night all! 08/07/2008 21:21:24 ‹Skeld› g'night nick 08/07/2008 21:21:25 ‹cappadocius› Thanks for stopping by and being informational! 08/07/2008 21:21:26 ‹Daigle› Have a great night, Nick! 08/07/2008 21:21:29 ‹Rambling Scribe› Night Nick! 08/07/2008 21:21:30 ‹Mothman› Cool, see you then 08/07/2008 21:21:31 ‹Watcher› night nick 08/07/2008 21:21:37 ‹Lilith› Later Nick! 08/07/2008 21:21:43 ‹James Jacobs› greengrunt> My general method of recharge is watching movies or playing videogames; MMORPGs are a GREAT recharge system. World of Warcraft and Age of Conan are the current favored recharges, as is The Witcher. Plus reading. 08/07/2008 21:22:04 ‹Hill Giant› How's the 52 movies going? 08/07/2008 21:22:09 ‹Daigle› So who's playing in events at GenCon? And when? 08/07/2008 21:22:10 ‹Nameless› How is the Witcher? I've been meaning to take a look at that. I'm not sure it'll run on my machine though. 08/07/2008 21:22:14 ‹James Jacobs› Absinth> Yes indeed. The Golarion Globe was a nod toward the fans' demand for a globe. 08/07/2008 21:22:26 ‹Absinth› Cool... 08/07/2008 21:22:29 ‹yoda8myhead› g'night Nick.  Thanks for the info! 08/07/2008 21:22:30 ‹Eyebite› *Would soooo buy a globe* 08/07/2008 21:22:32 ‹Fake Healer› Are we getting a globe? 08/07/2008 21:22:38 ‹greengrunt› JJ> Really WOW is detrimental for me... must have a great guild though.. What are you currently reading? 08/07/2008 21:22:42 ‹Daigle› The GLOBE! 08/07/2008 21:22:43 ‹Watcher› Daigle, I am making a special trip in for Ascent for the Drow 21:22:53 ‹Absinth› Omg, what did I start? 08/07/2008 21:23:05 ‹James Jacobs› Hill Giant> It's behind. I just saw Wanted, The Incredible Hulk, and Get Smart. That brings me up to 20. So I'm about 7 behind or so... 08/07/2008 21:23:05 * Nick Logue quit (timeout) 08/07/2008 21:23:23 ‹Absinth› How's The Hulk, James? 08/07/2008 21:23:32 ‹Russ› thanks Nick 08/07/2008 21:23:33 ‹Russ› oops 08/07/2008 21:23:34 ‹James Jacobs› Nameless> The Witcher is INCREDIBLY FUN. It's also Rated M. It's not for the kids. But yeah... Last night I killed Dagon in The Witcher. Good times. 08/07/2008 21:23:35 ‹Russ› lagged 08/07/2008 21:23:44 ‹Absinth› Better than Ang Lee's Hulk? 08/07/2008 21:23:51 ‹Eyebite› If wanted didn't have Angelina Jolie in it, would it be worth seeing? 08/07/2008 21:24:01 ‹Russ› (agree with James on his lifestyle summary) 08/07/2008 21:24:12 ‹Russ› don't add enough to be worht the danged maths! 08/07/2008 21:24:20 ‹James Jacobs› Greengrunt> Yup; have a great guild in WoW. Also... I'm not really interested in the hard-core end-game raiding. I AM in the hard-core End Game PVP scene though... but I've pretty much maxed out my character there so I'm sorta cooling my jets till the expansion. 08/07/2008 21:24:22 ‹greengrunt› Eyebite has a very good question about 'Wanted' 08/07/2008 21:24:24 * cappadocius is playing in all of the PFS events at GenCon - Frozen Fingers at 1 on Thursday, Silken Murder at 8 on Friday, Silent Tide at 1 on Friday, and Hydra's Fang in the morning on Saturday, Daigle. 08/07/2008 21:24:55 ‹greengrunt› JJ> So you're the uber king in WOW arena combat?? 08/07/2008 21:24:59 ‹Daigle› Gracias 08/07/2008 21:25:04 * BrianC will be gameless at GenCon. 08/07/2008 21:25:07 ‹James Jacobs› Absinth> The Incredible Hulk was average. Good effects, light on story, not much happens, and in the end a little dull. I MUCH prefered Ang Lee's version. 08/07/2008 21:25:17 ‹James Jacobs› The opening scenes of Brazil were incredible though. 08/07/2008 21:25:24 * cappadocius looks at James Jacobs like he grew a second head. 08/07/2008 21:25:35 ‹greengrunt› 08/07/2008 21:25:39 ‹cappadocius› BrianC> Why will you be gameless? 08/07/2008 21:25:46 ‹Skeld› James Jacobs, preferred ang lee's version?  wow, i haven't heard anyone say that 08/07/2008 21:25:55 ‹cappadocius› Seriously. 08/07/2008 21:25:56 ‹Watcher› Eyebite, I thought Wanted was overrated. Besides AJ that is. It was the first time I thought the mainstream critics gave a move TOO MUCH credit 08/07/2008 21:26:00 ‹yoda8myhead› cappa, he'll be too busy trying to get Wes to throw him work 08/07/2008 21:26:01 ‹Nameless› Skeld> Besides Ang Lee, of course. 08/07/2008 21:26:04 * Fray quit (timeout) 08/07/2008 21:26:04 * Fray quit (timeout) 08/07/2008 21:26:12 ‹cappadocius› I'd prefer a kick in the nuts to Ang Lee's version. 08/07/2008 21:26:14 ‹James Jacobs› Eyebite> Yes. Of course, Angelina Jolie makes it MUUUUCH better, but the movie itself is still very fun. It's like a crazy violent combination of Fight Club, Equilibrium, and The Matrix. It's essentially a superhero movie too... so go in expecting superheros and not something else... 08/07/2008 21:26:20 ‹Skeld› Nameless, chuckle 08/07/2008 21:26:24 ‹jmberaldo› Didnt watch the movie yet, but Im curious about how my city appears in it 08/07/2008 21:26:35 ‹cappadocius› Technically, Wanted is a superVILLAIN story. 08/07/2008 21:26:39 ‹Eyebite› That's kind of what I thought it might be like. 08/07/2008 21:26:41 ‹Absinth› I liked Ang Lee's version too. The only let down was that there wasn't enough mayhem and destruction in it... 08/07/2008 21:26:49 ‹cappadocius› unless they really, REALLY changed the story. 08/07/2008 21:26:54 ‹greengrunt› I just saw the CG Beowulf this weekend.. Totally AWESOME@ 21:26:55 ‹Wyvern› Hmm.. It's actually a supervillain movie. 08/07/2008 21:27:02 ‹cappadocius› I mean, I know they took out all the rape and racially motivated killings... 08/07/2008 21:27:04 ‹Wyvern› Or at least is supposed to be. 08/07/2008 21:27:08 ‹Russ› I liked Ang Lee's version. 08/07/2008 21:27:10 ‹greengrunt› (speaking of AJ) 08/07/2008 21:27:15 ‹Russ› It played off the best storyline I can remember in the Hulk 08/07/2008 21:27:17 ‹greengrunt› even if she was CG 08/07/2008 21:27:20 ‹Pygon› gg - the 3D IMAX spectacle was worth the price fo rme 08/07/2008 21:27:22 ‹Watcher› Eyebite, to refine, and put a different spin on it than JJ.. I thought it actually got predictable. Not the specific stunts, but the plot. itself. 08/07/2008 21:27:22 ‹jmberaldo› (insert hulk actor name here) was all bleh about filming in brazil because people were asking for authographs and such on the streets, so he left earlier 08/07/2008 21:27:22 ‹yoda8myhead› greengrunt, I liked Beowulf too 08/07/2008 21:27:25 ‹Lilith› James Jacobs, what's your opinion on the Second Darkness adventures/set pieces so far? Meeting/Exceeding expectations? 08/07/2008 21:27:26 ‹Nameless› Well gentlemen, it's getting late over here. I bid you all good night! Thanks for the excellent chatting! 08/07/2008 21:27:26 ‹Eyebite› Aw c'mon, who didn't like the Hulk Dogs in Ang Lee's version? *snicker* 08/07/2008 21:27:27 ‹Absinth› I agree, Russ 08/07/2008 21:27:40 ‹James Jacobs› Skeld> Yeah... I quite liked the Ang Lee hulk. It was a MOVIE, not a special effects reel. 08/07/2008 21:27:44 ‹Absinth› Night, Nameless 08/07/2008 21:27:55 ‹Pygon› gnite Nameless 08/07/2008 21:28:06 ‹Ross writing› I liked both. 08/07/2008 21:28:08 ‹Rambling Scribe› Night Nameless! 08/07/2008 21:28:11 ‹Ross writing› Meh. Hul Smash. 08/07/2008 21:28:11 ‹cappadocius› I swear I've asked this multiple times before and one of these times it's going to stick, but do we know which gods are featured in Second Darkness? 08/07/2008 21:28:18 ‹Justin Sluder› James Jacobs, Hancock, seen it yet? 08/07/2008 21:28:19 ‹greengrunt› Beowulf actually reminded me alot of the Sci-Fi miniseries Dark Kingdom 08/07/2008 21:28:20 ‹Watcher› Night Nameless 08/07/2008 21:28:24 ‹James Jacobs› cappa> True. Supervillain movie is a better way to describe it. It's good! 08/07/2008 21:28:25 ‹Ross writing› As long as hulk smash, hulk live up to promise. 08/07/2008 21:28:26 * jmberaldo quit (timeout) 08/07/2008 21:28:26 * jmberaldo quit (timeout) 08/07/2008 21:28:26 * jmberaldo quit (timeout) 08/07/2008 21:28:26 * jmberaldo quit (timeout) 08/07/2008 21:28:26 * jmberaldo quit (timeout) 08/07/2008 21:28:26 * jmberaldo quit (timeout) 08/07/2008 21:28:26 * yoda8myhead quit (timeout) 08/07/2008 21:28:28 ‹Daigle› Goodnight Nameless 08/07/2008 21:28:39 ‹greengrunt› Night Nameless 08/07/2008 21:28:40 ‹Skeld› James Jacobs, hmmm, my wife and i went to see hulk for our anniversary...iron man conflicted with our dinner reservations or we would have seen it instead 08/07/2008 21:29:18 ‹James Jacobs› Cappa> The "good" guys in Wanted are very much bad guys. There's a LOT of collateral damage that they just don't care about. It's delightful. 08/07/2008 21:29:38 ‹Pygon› lotsa people died, it was great 08/07/2008 21:29:41 ‹Lilith› James Jacobs, Ahh...mass carnage. 08/07/2008 21:29:58 ‹Eyebite› Ugh, it's 98 degrees here at 9:30 08/07/2008 21:30:01 ‹James Jacobs› Watcher> Sure, it was predictable... but it was never dull and always entertaining. Predictable doesn't automaticaly mean bad. 08/07/2008 21:30:09 ‹Wyvern› There are no good guys. It's a comic. They are all villains. 08/07/2008 21:30:12 * garmel quit (timeout) 08/07/2008 21:30:21 ‹Wyvern› I mean they are all villains in the comic. 08/07/2008 21:30:26 ‹greengrunt› Speaking of Collateral.. I liked that movie too 08/07/2008 21:30:30 ‹cappadocius› Horrible, horrible villains in the comic. 08/07/2008 21:30:39 ‹cappadocius› Marc Millar at his most loathesome. 08/07/2008 21:30:40 ‹Russ› What do I know of taste, I picked Final Destination 3 last night 08/07/2008 21:30:42 * BrianC quit (timeout) 08/07/2008 21:30:43 * BrianC quit (timeout) 08/07/2008 21:30:48 ‹James Jacobs› Lilith> So far, Second Darkness stuff is all over the place. Color me wrong. 08/07/2008 21:30:59 ‹Mothman› Finally watched Pan's Labyrinth last night - I know, I know .... 08/07/2008 21:31:04 ‹James Jacobs› cappa> Cayden Cailean and Calistria 08/07/2008 21:31:06 ‹Watcher› Wanted is fantasy for young adults who feel like they have no direction or control in their lives, and it plays to a rather juvenile aspect of 'stickin' it to the man'. I mean it's a great move if you're 23 and probably stoned or slightly drunk 08/07/2008 21:31:08 ‹cappadocius› YES. 08/07/2008 21:31:14 ‹Pygon› Moth - and? 08/07/2008 21:31:15 ‹James Jacobs› Justin> Haven't seen Hancock yet, nope. 08/07/2008 21:31:20 ‹cappadocius› I knew you'd answered that before. Drop by my place when you're in Hamburg. I have a huge collection of whips for "challenging"... 08/07/2008 22:12:53 ‹Rambling Scribe› Greengrunt: I have a theory about Erikson's world. The 'humans' are actually halflings, The Teblor are the humans, the T'Lan Imass are dwarves as well as neandertals, the Jaghut are orcs, and the Jhag are half-orcs. 08/07/2008 22:12:59 ‹Jason Bulmahn› Russ> Hmm.. I am kinda spacing on that one.. I think I wanted to make a swap.. but I am not sure if I did... 08/07/2008 22:13:12 ‹greengrunt› Speaking of barbarians.. JJ I like the touch with Ury Sevenskulls who gets impatient and jumps from the battlements in Pathfinder #11 08/07/2008 22:13:25 ‹Jason Bulmahn› Ross> Interesting... real interesting... something to discuss in the Beta process 08/07/2008 22:13:29 ‹Sothal@work› Absinth: Hamburg is a little out of reach. But I try to attend the Spiel in Essen 08/07/2008 22:13:43 ‹Jason Bulmahn› brb 3 min 22:14:19 ‹James Jacobs› Greengrunt> Heh, yeah. It's amazing what kind of cool character quirks you can really drive home by having an NPC take an action that isn't 100% the best move. 08/07/2008 22:14:40 ‹James Jacobs› I do that a lot in games I run. Have NPCs make risky (or even flat-out bad) decisions. 08/07/2008 22:14:56 ‹James Jacobs› Then let the dice decide if they die. 08/07/2008 22:14:58 ‹Crimson Jester› Character Traits have me very interested....is there going to be any preview in the blog? 08/07/2008 22:15:06 ‹James Jacobs› I reckon so. 08/07/2008 22:15:13 ‹greengrunt› RS>  Hmmm.. interesting.. But the Teblor are so badass.. Wait until you read about Karsa duelling the emporer of the Tiste Edur in Reaper's Gale 08/07/2008 22:15:15 ‹James Jacobs› I might try to whip one up for next Monday. 08/07/2008 22:15:25 ‹Ross writing› Jason Bulmahn, I'm writing it up for KQ right now (that's the 'writing' part ) That might net more feedback, if Baur takes it. 08/07/2008 22:15:55 ‹greengrunt› JJ> Aye.. there's some great stuff in 11 08/07/2008 22:16:02 * Zaister_ joins Main 08/07/2008 22:16:12 ‹greengrunt› hi Zaister 08/07/2008 22:16:16 ‹Crimson Jester› Yeah sigh no pathfinder 11 yet 08/07/2008 22:16:23 ‹Zaister_› good morning 08/07/2008 22:16:24 ‹Rathendar› meh, there better be a package of paizo goodness when i wake up tomorrow in my mailbox. /grumble. 08/07/2008 22:16:26 ‹Pygon› same 08/07/2008 22:16:27 ‹Daigle› Howdy Zaister. 08/07/2008 22:16:28 ‹Sothal@work› Hey Zaister 08/07/2008 22:16:30 ‹Russ› Is "Gug" and "Rovagug" a coincidence? 08/07/2008 22:16:32 ‹greengrunt› CJ .. I hope you like it.. I sure did 08/07/2008 22:16:47 ‹Blazej› From what I read in the Gazetteer Pharasma is against the creation of undead (unless I missed something).  Why does she have Death domain, since most of the difference between Death and Repose are the undead creation? 08/07/2008 22:16:48 ‹Crimson Jester› when ever they send my payment through, Ive emailed twice 08/07/2008 22:16:56 ‹Sothal@work› Hey, I just got PF 10 yesterday 08/07/2008 22:17:18 * Wiglaf joins Main 08/07/2008 22:17:26 ‹greengrunt› Sothal.. 11 is a bucket of refreshing Paizo goodness 08/07/2008 22:17:27 ‹Daigle› Howdy Wiglaf 08/07/2008 22:17:32 ‹greengrunt› Hey Wiglaf 08/07/2008 22:17:34 ‹Absinth› I got my PF 10 on saturday. It's a really great book. 08/07/2008 22:17:35 ‹Crimson Jester› well right now Im waiting for Pathfinder 13 08/07/2008 22:17:42 ‹Crimson Jester› 08/07/2008 22:18:02 ‹Wiglaf› Hello 08/07/2008 22:18:03 ‹ollibolli› I am psoitively amazed by the Guide to the Darkmoon Vale. Mike's work is great 08/07/2008 22:18:07 ‹greengrunt› Dammit! You got the last of COTCT! I am so jealous! 08/07/2008 22:18:09 ‹James Jacobs› Russ> Not really. Rovagug is a god from my 25+ year old homebrew. I suspect I named him in a particularly potent HPL fugue. And certainly Greg adding gugs into the adventure and tying them to Rovagug wasn't a coincidence; that was a very conscious decision on his part, and one that, when he told me about it, I said "DO IT! FOR THE LOVE OF DESNA, DO IT!!!!" 08/07/2008 22:18:22 ‹greengrunt› I loved Mike's work in Guide to Korvosa! 08/07/2008 22:18:30 * Samwise quit (timeout) 08/07/2008 22:18:30 * Samwise quit (timeout) 08/07/2008 22:18:35 ‹greengrunt› I love that book 08/07/2008 22:18:49 ‹Rambling Scribe› Greengrunt: I'm looking forward to that confrontation. And yeah, the teblor are not really human, but all of the size comparisons work between the races. Tiste are of course elves, with Tiste (I forget) being drow. 22:19:19 ‹James Jacobs› Blazej> Pharasma is VERY anti undead. But she's also the goddess of death. Not giving her the death domain would have been weird. Frankly... I don't htink the Death domain SHOULD have undead stuff in there. It makes the domain generally a bad one for PCs, after all. There should be separate Death and Undeath domains. 08/07/2008 22:19:29 ‹greengrunt› RS> Karsa does something pretty amazing in Reaper's ... In one of his duels... I don't want to spoil it 08/07/2008 22:19:41 ‹Pygon› so she wants things to STAY dead 08/07/2008 22:19:44 ‹Jason Bulmahn› back 08/07/2008 22:19:47 ‹Zaister_› Jason Bulmahn, can you say if feats for monsters are still one per three HD in the beta (as opposed to 1 per 2 levels for characters) 08/07/2008 22:19:54 ‹James Jacobs› She wants life and death to stay separate. 08/07/2008 22:20:08 ‹Jason Bulmahn› Zaister> They are for the time being.. that might change 08/07/2008 22:20:19 ‹Saracenus› Welp night all 08/07/2008 22:20:21 ‹Zaister_› Thanks 08/07/2008 22:20:27 ‹Pygon› gnite Saracenus 08/07/2008 22:20:28 ‹Absinth› At first I didn't found it to be a good idea to include the Shoanti in CotCT. They felt kinda misplaced in the issue with the 1st appearance of Thousand Bones. But this feeling changed quickly after PF 10. I really like it now! I'm glad I didn't make the mistake to leave the Shoanti out of the AP... 08/07/2008 22:20:28 ‹Daigle› Night Saracenus 08/07/2008 22:20:30 ‹James Jacobs› I suspect she DOES have some hereitcs or splinter faiths who do use undead, though, and probaly solely undead created from living creatures who requested the status, and even then probably only for a limited time. 08/07/2008 22:20:31 ‹greengrunt› RS> Anyway.. What he does .. Well it certainly isn't human 08/07/2008 22:20:35 ‹Crimson Jester› How long out would Tian Xia be? '09 '10? 08/07/2008 22:20:56 ‹Rambling Scribe› JJ: That was how I used to always play Wee Jas. I don't think the death domain should neccessarilly be tied to undeath. 08/07/2008 22:21:17 ‹Zaister_› Jason Bulmahn, monsters with added class levels have two separate feat progressions then that add up probably? 08/07/2008 22:21:20 ‹greengrunt› Night Saracenus 08/07/2008 22:21:24 ‹James Jacobs› A big Tian Xia book is, at the minimum, a year away. It's VERY LIKELY to be closer to 2 years away. Or more. 08/07/2008 22:21:28 ‹Jason Bulmahn› Zaister> yes 08/07/2008 22:21:41 ‹James Jacobs› Scribe> Pharasma and Wee Jas actually ahve pretty much the same viewpoints there, yeah. 08/07/2008 22:21:42 * Saracenus quit (timeout) 08/07/2008 22:21:58 ‹Zaister_› Ah fine. Needed to know that for the PCGen implementation 08/07/2008 22:22:01 ‹Crimson Jester› I played a couple of Paladins of We jas, sole reason for living was to take out Undead whodid not go to their rightful rest 08/07/2008 22:22:03 ‹James Jacobs› Wee Jas is more accepting of undead than Pharasma, but Pharasma is absolutely the James Jacobs Ripoff of Wee Jas. 08/07/2008 22:22:08 ‹BM› I hope you make monsters gain feats at the same rate as PCs. Makes stating monsters more tedious 08/07/2008 22:22:23 ‹Rambling Scribe› GG: Yeah, he also has four lungs. I just think it was Erikson's starting point for his campaign world. Focusing on the scale of size small rather than medium. He modified all the races, including what were humans on that scale. 08/07/2008 22:22:32 ‹James Jacobs› BM> That's my hope too! 08/07/2008 22:22:39 ‹greengrunt› Yeah but Pharasma sounds better 08/07/2008 22:22:43 ‹Wiglaf› I am rather glad to hear that bit about the god of death.  As much as I like the undead, I just don't see Death liking them very much. 08/07/2008 22:22:43 ‹Jason Bulmahn› BM> I am in agreement there.. but we only touch on monsters lightly in the Beta at this point.. that will probably change 08/07/2008 22:22:50 ‹yoda8myhead› Scribe and Grunt, what are you talking about?  it sounds intriguing 08/07/2008 22:22:52 ‹James Jacobs› Greengrunt> Thanks! 08/07/2008 22:22:55 ‹Zaister_› I can live with different porgressions between class levles and racial hit dice 08/07/2008 22:22:57 ‹BM› Okay. 08/07/2008 22:23:27 ‹James Jacobs› We DO have a "Grim Reaper" type god of accidental death, though. He gets introduced in the hardcover. He and Pharasma do NOT get along well. 08/07/2008 22:23:30 ‹greengrunt› RS> He leaves so much mystery in his books.. Like who the hell were the Forkrul Assail!? 08/07/2008 22:23:38 ‹BM› Have you made any changes to CMB? Or any Combat Maneuvers? I made a thread detailing things I noticed about them 08/07/2008 22:23:41 ‹Rambling Scribe› JJ: Yeah, I had my own interpretation of Wee Jas from back in 1E days, and I just stuck with it. The standard depiction of her is much more accepting of undead. 08/07/2008 22:23:46 ‹Jason Bulmahn› well.. I've got some writing to do tonight.. so I should probably get going... I will hopefully have more time to chat next week 08/07/2008 22:23:54 ‹Wiglaf› Heh heh heh, that sounds great 08/07/2008 22:23:55 ‹greengrunt› RS> they were very interesting.. what little we glimpsed of them 08/07/2008 22:24:00 ‹Pygon› thanks Jason 08/07/2008 22:24:08 ‹Jason Bulmahn› First Beta preview goes up this Friday I believe... 08/07/2008 22:24:10 ‹yoda8myhead› thanks Jason 08/07/2008 22:24:10 ‹Ross writing› More to the point, Pharasma is a fate goddess and wants people do die at their proper time. Undead are active agents of death, hate, and murder. Those are bad. 08/07/2008 22:24:13 ‹yoda8myhead› I look forward to it 08/07/2008 22:24:15 ‹Pygon› excellent! 08/07/2008 22:24:17 ‹Daigle› Have a good night, Jason. 08/07/2008 22:24:18 ‹Rambling Scribe› GG: I don't know about the Forkrull Assail, but they are scary! 08/07/2008 22:24:19 ‹Zaister_› Jason Bulmahn, thanks 08/07/2008 22:24:30 ‹Wiglaf› Good night Jason 08/07/2008 22:24:35 ‹Ross writing› Jason Bulmahn, night. 08/07/2008 22:24:35 ‹greengrunt› G'night Jason 08/07/2008 22:24:36 ‹Jason Bulmahn› Night everybody 08/07/2008 22:24:43 ‹Blazej› Night Jason Bulmahn, 08/07/2008 22:24:46 ‹ollibolli› gn8 jason 08/07/2008 22:24:51 ‹Russ› thanks, Jasonn 08/07/2008 22:24:52 ‹James Jacobs› Seeya Jason! 08/07/2008 22:24:52 ‹Rambling Scribe› Night Jason! 08/07/2008 22:24:53 ‹Lilith› NIght Jason! :glomp 08/07/2008 22:25:30 ‹Russ› I hope monster/PCs get feats at the same rate, otherwise it is headache to do a classed monster 08/07/2008 22:25:36 ‹Russ› Though if a classed monster gets the extra feats, it works out 08/07/2008 22:25:40 ‹Absinth› Night, Jason. 08/07/2008 22:26:04 ‹James Jacobs› Russ> I agree. Feat aquisition must be tied to HD and it must be standardized. It wasn't in 3.0, and that was a complete mess. 08/07/2008 22:26:11 * Jason Bulmahn quit (timeout) 08/07/2008 22:26:16 ‹Zaister_› Russ, it's not that bad actually, if you keep the two progression separate and than add them up 08/07/2008 22:26:19 ‹greengrunt› RS> Didn't Karsa and his buddies release a Forkrul Assail as they were journeying to raid another Teblor village?? 08/07/2008 22:26:22 ‹Crimson Jester› well and having all the rules work the same for both monsters and pcs makes all the headaches of monster stats go away 08/07/2008 22:26:24 ‹James Jacobs› BUT: Monsters aren't really a big part of the Beta, and for playtesting, the total number of feats a monster gets is kinda irrelevent. 08/07/2008 22:26:24 ‹Rambling Scribe› GG One of my favorite things about Erikson, is that he's on schedule both in terms of releasing his books, and in terms of confining his story to the number of books he originally set out to write. 08/07/2008 22:26:40 ‹Zaister_› racial hit dica and class levels are adifferent things 08/07/2008 22:26:46 ‹James Jacobs› Well... not irrelevent, but not as important as making sure rage points are cool, for example. 08/07/2008 22:26:51 ‹greengrunt› RS> He is a writing machine.. 08/07/2008 22:26:58 ‹Russ› Zaister - the math doesn't work for me. I'm annoyed enoiugh by not having fractional BAB and saves. 08/07/2008 22:27:00 ‹Rambling Scribe› GG: Yes. That was the Forkrull Assail that freaked me out, because it handed Karsa and his friends their asses. 08/07/2008 22:27:01 ‹Absinth› RS, yes, that's amazing. 08/07/2008 22:27:31 ‹James Jacobs› Monsters and PCs should use the same rules for creation. That's a core strength of the 3.5 system, and one of the great innovations of 3rd edition, actually. 08/07/2008 22:27:44 ‹Zaister_› yep 08/07/2008 22:27:49 ‹BM› The only problem is when you use 3.5 material and the monsters should have more feats.  But its the same for PCs. 08/07/2008 22:27:55 ‹BM› *NPCs. 08/07/2008 22:28:02 ‹greengrunt› RS> Heh.. there is another encounter with an Assail somewhere.. Was it in Midnight Tides?? 08/07/2008 22:28:03 ‹Pygon› in retrospect on other systems *cough* it makes the fights seem between more equal opponents too 08/07/2008 22:28:13 ‹Ross writing› Russ, fractional saves would also fix the +2 multiclassing bump. 08/07/2008 22:28:21 ‹James Jacobs› It's hard to imagine that monsters weren't actually given ability scores 08/07/2008 22:28:29 ‹Pygon› although some advancement methods can overpower some creatures badly 08/07/2008 22:28:43 ‹Zaister_› sevel monsters might need new feats when they have multiple toughness feats 08/07/2008 22:28:54 ‹Crimson Jester› there has to be a fix for multiclassing to much.......other then the GM just saying NO 08/07/2008 22:28:55 * garmel quit (timeout) 08/07/2008 22:29:06 ‹Absinth› Multiple toughness feats? 08/07/2008 22:29:10 ‹BM› James, Argeed.  The one thing I wished for 4e when I first heard about it was the they would basically treat racial HD as class levels. But ohh well. 08/07/2008 22:29:18 ‹James Jacobs› Advancing monsters and giving them super specialized feats should alter their CR more than the current rules suggest, that's for sure. 08/07/2008 22:29:26 ‹Zaister_› yep, some monsters habe toughness more than once 08/07/2008 22:29:37 ‹Pygon› I'm thinking of a certain Eye of the Deep 08/07/2008 22:29:40 ‹yoda8myhead› greengrunt, Rambling Scribe, what are you talking about?  Sounds intriguing but I missed the start 08/07/2008 22:29:47 ‹BM› Tarrasque has 6 of toughness feats. 08/07/2008 22:29:48 ‹Blazej› Cryohydra with Quicken Breath! 08/07/2008 22:29:48 ‹greengrunt› RS> I think it was the Letherii that released in the hopes of stmying the Tiste Edur advance 08/07/2008 22:29:54 ‹Russ› Ross - yep.  I hate the warping of the game caused byt stacking favored saves. 08/07/2008 22:29:55 ‹James Jacobs› I think they're talking about Bella Sera. 08/07/2008 22:29:58 ‹greengrunt› Yoda... we 08/07/2008 22:30:03 ‹Absinth› lol 08/07/2008 22:30:03 ‹Daigle› 08/07/2008 22:30:08 ‹Rambling Scribe› BM: I've long believed that monster HD would work better if they scaled more closely to class levels. 08/07/2008 22:30:16 ‹Daigle› Sebastian finally changed his avatar 08/07/2008 22:30:16 ‹Russ› James - gads, I was converting a 2nd ed product, I had pushed "storm giant strength" out of my heaf 08/07/2008 22:30:17 ‹greengrunt› oops.. talking about Steven Erikson's books 08/07/2008 22:30:26 ‹Crimson Jester› On Sebastian Talkes of Bella Sera 08/07/2008 22:30:27 ‹BM› Which would give him an extra 306 HP. 08/07/2008 22:30:42 ‹BM› Rambling Scribe, fully argeed. 08/07/2008 22:30:47 ‹Daigle› He has a pony and its name is Skipper. 08/07/2008 22:30:52 ‹Russ› And THERE was a brilliant 2nd edism. Str 20 could throw further than Str 21. Because Str 20 was stone giant Str. 08/07/2008 22:30:55 ‹Zaister_› BM: you can't take the new toughness more than once 08/07/2008 22:30:57 ‹James Jacobs› BM> The tarrasque, honestly, can use those extra hp. 08/07/2008 22:31:00 ‹Wiglaf› Does it have a little hat? 08/07/2008 22:31:01 ‹greengrunt› Tales of the Malazan Book of the Fallen.. it's a series.. It's up to eight books now 08/07/2008 22:31:02 ‹Rambling Scribe› Steven Erikson is an amazing author. 08/07/2008 22:31:18 ‹Zaister_› so basically the tarrasque has 5 free feats 08/07/2008 22:31:26 ‹James Jacobs› Yup. 08/07/2008 22:31:27 ‹BM› I hope PFRPG will do something with the Monsters as PC rules. LA just sucks badly. 08/07/2008 22:31:34 ‹Zaister_› oh yes 08/07/2008 22:31:35 ‹greengrunt› The series begins with the book- Gardens of the Moon 08/07/2008 22:31:40 ‹James Jacobs› He should just take Improved Natural Armor 5 times. 08/07/2008 22:31:41 ‹yoda8myhead› What has he written? 22:31:48 ‹BM› Zaister talking if they toughness stacked. 08/07/2008 22:31:57 ‹greengrunt› it starts off a little weak.. but it really grows stronger as the series progresses 08/07/2008 22:31:59 ‹James Jacobs› BM>I think the solution there is to just throw out LA entirely. 08/07/2008 22:32:00 ‹Rambling Scribe› GG: I don't really recall the other Forkrull. I'm going to reread the whole series when the last book comes out. 08/07/2008 22:32:04 ‹yoda8myhead› is it a long series of long books?  I like those 08/07/2008 22:32:19 ‹Zaister_› BN: 3.5 Tougness stacks, yes, PFRPG doesn't 08/07/2008 22:32:24 ‹Lilith› James Jacobs, would you use straight HD as an alternate? 08/07/2008 22:32:27 ‹James Jacobs› Although monsters should be built on the same basic rules as a PC... not all monsters are or SHOULD be playable as PCs. 08/07/2008 22:32:27 ‹BM› James Jacobs,  any idea that will replace it? 08/07/2008 22:32:33 ‹Absinth› Isn't it aimed at 12 books with 8 already released? 08/07/2008 22:32:39 ‹Wiglaf› I agree that LA doesn't seem to work too well.  Then again, I like Half-Ogre PCs.  Before nick got a hold of them anyway.  08/07/2008 22:32:39 ‹James Jacobs› I would encourage folk to not play monsters, honestly. That's a different game entirely. 08/07/2008 22:32:42 ‹Rambling Scribe› Yoda: The one in front of me is ~ 1200 pages. 08/07/2008 22:33:02 ‹Blazej› 08/07/2008 22:33:04 ‹James Jacobs› The concept of playing monsters should be handled in a book, a capstone system like Psionics. 08/07/2008 22:33:05 ‹Crimson Jester› Does anyone ahve games where monsters are played a lot anyway? 08/07/2008 22:33:15 ‹Rambling Scribe› I can't remember now if it's going to be 10 or 12, but 8 are now out. 08/07/2008 22:33:16 ‹greengrunt› Gardens of the Moon, Deadhouse Gates, Memories of Ice, House of Chains, Midnight Tides, The Bonehunters, Reaper's Gale, Toll of the Hounds.. Whew 08/07/2008 22:33:21 ‹Zaister_› not every race with LA ist a "monster" though 08/07/2008 22:33:22 ‹James Jacobs› Either that, or each GM should make his own decisions onw hat monsters he wants his PCs to play. 08/07/2008 22:33:25 ‹Crimson Jester› I have one player who does anytime we let him, but justone 08/07/2008 22:33:32 * Blazej raises his hand. 08/07/2008 22:33:44 ‹Zaister_› I'm partial to githyanki for example 08/07/2008 22:34:00 ‹Daigle› Our group has talked about doing a one-shot playing monsters, but we always do something else instead. 08/07/2008 22:34:04 ‹James Jacobs› BUT: For Golarion... we assume PCs are humans or demihumans. The adventures and sorucebooks make little allowance for PCs who are goblins or trolls or gibbering mouthers or liches or will-o-wisps or pterodactyls. 08/07/2008 22:34:08 ‹Rambling Scribe› JJ: I agree on monsters are not all playable, and shouldn't be, but CR balancing would be easier the more similar the systems were. 08/07/2008 22:34:09 ‹yoda8myhead› 1200 pages!  I thought GRRM and Jordan were bad 08/07/2008 22:34:12 ‹BM› As long as there is rules to play as monsters. I hate when RPGs say no you can't for no good reason. 08/07/2008 22:34:13 ‹Crimson Jester› Yes Blazej? 08/07/2008 22:34:37 ‹Rambling Scribe› Yoda: But Erikson has never been late with a book. 08/07/2008 22:34:46 ‹Blazej› I have had a game where monstrous PCs were somewhat common. 08/07/2008 22:34:47 ‹greengrunt› IMO I think he's better than Jordan and Martin combined.. But don't let me jazz him up too much 08/07/2008 22:34:50 ‹Zaister_› James Jacobs, some LA creatures are demihumans, like drow or chaos gnomes or aasimar for expample 08/07/2008 22:34:58 ‹greengrunt› Some people hate him 22:35:01 ‹James Jacobs› CR should be a gauge of how tough a monster is compared to other monsters. That's an entirely different thing from "how broken is this mosnter for a PC to play?" 08/07/2008 22:35:12 ‹Russ› LA doesnt' work as badly as people say, tho. I thought Savage Species had it right - a monster PC should be a bit weaker. You get the cooler PC, it is a tradeoff. 08/07/2008 22:35:28 ‹Zaister_› grrengrunt, the series is too military focused for my taste as far as I can tell 08/07/2008 22:35:34 ‹Wyvern› I want to be a gibbering mouther monk! 08/07/2008 22:35:37 ‹Rambling Scribe› I agree with Greengrunt. I like GRRM and I used to like Jordan, but I like Erikson better. 08/07/2008 22:35:44 ‹greengrunt› Zaister.. It's not 08/07/2008 22:35:48 ‹Russ› Absolutely agreed. The classic example for me is an ogre mage. Underwehlming monster, amazing PC with a good blocker in front of it, particularly with the elite array. 08/07/2008 22:35:53 ‹James Jacobs› Zaister> Yup. And having played a drow for a few years... that LA garbage is just that, Garbage. You're a bit tougher at lower levels, sure, but the XP hit at higher levels SUCKS, and the bonuses you gain diminish in cool with each level. 08/07/2008 22:36:03 ‹Pygon› Spring Attack Stunning Slam! 08/07/2008 22:36:12 ‹Zaister_› greengrunt, it's what I've heard from all my friends that read it 08/07/2008 22:36:12 ‹Rambling Scribe› The first book is more military focused than most, especially the beginning. 08/07/2008 22:36:20 ‹greengrunt› Alot of books do focus on the Malazan army .. granted.. but he breaks away from that in a few books 08/07/2008 22:36:32 ‹Russ› (mind you, I do think LA works somewhat badly!) 08/07/2008 22:36:36 ‹James Jacobs› Frankly... the more class levels you get, the more your power is based on your class, not your race. The concept of associated and non-associated class levels addresses this, somewhat, for monsters. The LA replacement system should do the same. 08/07/2008 22:36:54 ‹greengrunt› But the Malazan armies focused on in the books... It ain't your typical fantasy army 08/07/2008 22:37:03 ‹Crimson Jester› James since they are OGL would you consider using Aasimar or Tieflings ect..... as a PC race at some point? 08/07/2008 22:37:04 ‹Zaister_› James Jacobs, I used the LA buy off rule from UA for a while, nut with PFRPG that doesn't really fir anymore 08/07/2008 22:37:05 ‹Russ› Yeah, ,but it is hard to give someone a fractional level penalty under the 3E xp system. PF allows you to get xp penalties to work again, so it may do better. 08/07/2008 22:37:07 ‹Ross writing› Drow should lose SR. That would help level them a lot. 08/07/2008 22:37:10 ‹Pygon› so LA would differ depending on which class is taken... 08/07/2008 22:37:11 ‹Wiglaf› Excellent.  Glad to hear it. 08/07/2008 22:37:13 ‹greengrunt› they get caught up in events bigger than a conquest for the Empire 08/07/2008 22:37:18 ‹James Jacobs› Crimson> Absolutely. 08/07/2008 22:37:43 ‹James Jacobs› I put an aasimar in the first adventure, frankly, to cement their presence in Golarion ASAP for that reason. 08/07/2008 22:37:44 ‹Rambling Scribe› The biggest complaint most people have about Erikson is that he throws you into the ocean of his incredibly detailed world and lets you swim or drown. 08/07/2008 22:37:50 ‹Daigle› AP4 perhaps? 08/07/2008 22:37:58 ‹greengrunt› Aye.. I like that about him RS 08/07/2008 22:38:00 ‹James Jacobs› And there are a LOT of tieflings in Cheliax. And quite a few in Riddleport too. 08/07/2008 22:38:03 ‹Russ› Particularly, PF RPG will allow the penalty to go down as you go up. 08/07/2008 22:38:03 ‹Crimson Jester› I was actually going to post this but as an Homage to Gygax how about a weasel race? naw never work 08/07/2008 22:38:15 ‹Rambling Scribe› GG: me too, but some people don't like it. 08/07/2008 22:38:20 ‹yoda8myhead› Rambling Scribe, i love that about Jordan, though, so it might be for me 08/07/2008 22:38:21 ‹greengrunt› In Gardens of the Moon.. I strongly suggest going to the back and reading the Appendixes 08/07/2008 22:38:29 * Zaister_ quit (timeout) 08/07/2008 22:38:36 ‹Absinth› We're playing monster oneshots or mini-campaigns from time to time. It's kinda refreshing to somehow "change sides". We had an orc mini-campaign, a vampire mini-campaign and a one-shot in which the players played kenku. all of those were fun, but I wouldn't want to DM a whole campaign with monster PCs. 08/07/2008 22:38:40 ‹James Jacobs› Ross> Thing about SR is that it's not necessarilly a GOOD thing to have at higher levels for a PC. Especially when it comes to healing. 08/07/2008 22:38:52 ‹greengrunt› RS> He doesn't dumb it down and backtrack like Jordan did 08/07/2008 22:39:10 ‹Rambling Scribe› Yep. 08/07/2008 22:39:21 ‹Russ› Particularly cure light wounds wands 08/07/2008 22:39:33 ‹greengrunt› Rather, in Gardens of the Moon.. read the appendix first before starting the book 08/07/2008 22:39:33 ‹Crimson Jester› Are the Jordan Conan Novels worth the read?? 08/07/2008 22:39:42 ‹Pygon› tired.  Good night all.  Thanks again James! 08/07/2008 22:39:50 ‹Daigle› Goodnight Pygon! 08/07/2008 22:39:51 ‹Crimson Jester› Night Pygon 08/07/2008 22:39:51 ‹James Jacobs› My drow actually died at least once becase the other PCs couldn't get through her SR with healing. And she relatively often missed out on AOE buffs. 08/07/2008 22:39:56 ‹greengrunt› I don't know CJ.. Night Pygon 08/07/2008 22:39:59 ‹Rambling Scribe› Night Pygon!
